2006 hyundai sonata review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new mid-size sedan is a compelling buy. introductionthe mid-size, mid-price car market is approaching saturation. Depending on how they're counted, more than seven nameplates compete for shoppers looking for a car that's thrifty, yet performs; that's comfortable, but not expensive; that's fresh and new, but promises to be reliable. korea's car makers have never been a part of this class. They've danced around the edges, with the kia optima and hyundai sonata. But neither car has broken through and established a solid foothold in the mainstream u. Market. enter the all-new 2006 hyundai sonata. while the previous-generation sonata made a dramatic jump to the top spot in the j. Power and associates 2004 initial quality study ranking of entry midsize cars, the 2006 sonata has been completely redesigned. It's bigger, better equipped, more technologically advanced and sharper looking than the 2005 model it replaces. the class in which the new sonata competes, however, is blurred. Exterior-wise, it goes against mid-size sedans, primarily the honda accord, toyota camry and nissan altima and secondarily against the chevrolet malibu, the kia optima and the upcoming ford fusion. Inside, though, the '06 sonata moves up a class, to large car, which gives it a potential edge in creature comfort. with minor and essentially immaterial exceptions, it lives up to that potential. It's roomier in almost every dimension than its midsize competitors, which is no surprise. Fit and finish is on a par with most others in the class, which also is no surprise. In terms of performance, it equals or bests comparably featured cars, which is a surprise. It's cleaner, too, than earlier sonatas. Just as important, if not more so, the new sonata is aggressively priced, positioned smack in the middle of the range of prices of the mid-size sedans. all this combined makes the 2006 hyundai sonata good enough to put the mid-priced, midsize market on notice. Two engines and three transmissions are available. The uplevel engine is a 235-horsepower v6. Standard equipment includes air conditioning; cruise control; power outside mirrors, windows and central locking with keyless remote; am/fm/cd/mp3 stereo; and leather-wrapped, tilt steering wheel. The list of standard items starts with those on the gl and expands to include fog lamps; premium-grade cloth upholstery and cut-pile carpeting; choice of wood-grain or metal-grain interior trim accents; steering wheel-mounted, redundant audio controls; adjustable lumbar in driver's seat; five-function trip computer; carpeted floor mats; and 16-inch alloy wheels in place of the gl's hub-capped steel wheels. The gls order sheet has two option boxes. One is for a power, tilt-and-slide glass sunroof 850). The other is for a premium package 1350) containing the aforementioned sunroof plus auto-dimming inside rearview mirror with compass (both with a much-appreciated on/off switch), homelink programmable garage and security remote and eight-way power driver's seat. next up the gls v6 20,895), which comes standard with a five-speed automatic. This brings with it solar control window glass, chrome exterior window trim and chrome-tipped dual exhausts. The sunroof is an option 850). The optional premium sport package 1500) includes the sunroof, 17-inch wheels with michelin pilot tires, the electrochromic rearview mirror with compass, homelink and power driver's seat. on the top rung is the lx 22,895), which comes with everything on the gls plus leather-trimmed seats and simulated leather interior door panel inserts. Distinguished by chrome exterior door handles, the lx also gets automatic air conditioning with hyundai's air quality system, which shifts to recirculating when it detects offensive or polluted outside air; a sliding cover on the front center console; the auto-dimming inside rearview mirror with compass; the homelink system; the eight-way power driver's seat; and a tilt and telescoping steering wheel. The sunroof can be obtained separately 850) or as part of an lx-exclusive premium package 1400) that also has a am/fm/cd6 changer/mp3 stereo with subwoofer. safety features in addition to the mandatory dual-stage front-seat airbags include front-seat side-impact airbags for torso protection and full-coverage side curtain airbags, designed to provide head protection, all standard on all models. Active-safety features include antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and electronic stability control with traction control, all standard. These crash-avoidance features are optional or not available on many of the other vehicles in this class. walkarounddesign tastes are extremely volatile in the automotive world. A styling cue like an arched-eyebrow headlight treatment can go from eye-catching to invisible in a couple years. Or it can survive for decades and come to be accepted as a brand trademark, such as bmw's twin-kidney grille. The hyundai sonata hasn't yet found its signature trademark cues, but the 2006's designers are looking in the right places. the new sonata's fascia is refreshingly clean and spare, with sharply angled headlight housings and a quiet, clean-cut grille topped with a sliver of chrome. Wide and deep openings beneath the front bumper provide a home for tightly focused foglamps and visually pull the front end closer to the ground while directing cooling air into the radiator. The striking, concave hood reduces the car's perceived mass without cramping the engine compartment. the side treatment avoids the all-too-common wedge look with an almost horizontal beltline riding above softly shouldered fenders and door panels. Mirrored 'z' seams where the end corners of the bumpers meet the quarter panels add interest, while blacked-out window surrounds play down the tallish side glass. The flat-flanged rims on the up-level 17-inch wheels suggest a high-end european import more than an affordable asian nameplate. the taillight outlines repeat the headlight shapes and bookend a broad, trapezoidal license plate inset. Again, there's a hint of other cars' architecture, most notably contemporary camrys and accords. Sporty, california hotrod-idiom dual exhausts mark the v6-equipped models. interiorthe 2006 hyundai sonata's interior marks a major step up the quality ladder. Some rough edges on a few plastic molds and a less-than-lustrous finish on some dash panels are the only shortcomings we noticed. The overall look, though, is clearly competitive with most in the class and better than some. a polished, hard-surfaced applique capped with a thin slice of chrome divides the upper and lower halves of the dash. The upper is a glare-absorbing dark color, the lower a space-enhancing light tone. The passenger airbag enclosure is seamless, mimicking the trend in higher-end midsize sedans. as with many modern cars, the stereo head is fully integrated into the dash, making difficult any aftermarket customizing of the sound system but adding an upscale touch. Air conditioner controls are mounted beneath the stereo, within the accent trim centered in the lower portion of the center stack. Stereo and air conditioner controls are substantial, finger-friendly, intuitive knobs and buttons, with status and selections clearly displayed in their respective lcd screens. three round dials in the hooded instrument cluster communicate the bare necessities of operational data to the driver, with the largest the speedometer nestled inside a polished circle. To its left is the tachometer, to its right conjoined water temperature and fuel gauges. In the lower dash to the left of the steering column are a bank of five switch plugs, only two of which are employed in the u. Version, one as an on/off for the esc, the other the dash-light rheostat, and a flip-down storage bin. The ignition key slides into a slot placed where it should be, in the dash to the right of the steering column instead of on the steering column itself. all models get a leather-wrapped steering wheel. On the gls and lx, the steering wheel serves multiple duties. Besides the obvious, redundant controls for the audio (arrayed somewhat oddly, with the mode selector on top and the volume controlled by the lower two, versus the more common approach of sandwiching the mode button between the volume controls) are appended to the lower left-side of the hub. On the other side of the hub are the cruise controls, with a helpful cancel function. outward visibility is good, although the wide c-pillars constrict quick, over-the-shoulder traffic checks for lane changing. Rear side windows roll all the way down, thanks to small, fixed, rear quarter windows that move the windows' rear tracks forward in the door. The cloth upholstery on the gl looks and feels durable; on the gls, it's a bit fancier in texture and stitchi. Attentive observers might spot styling cues from the volkswagen passat up front, and design elements similar to the audi a6 in the rear. That's not a bad thing, as many people regard the passat and a6 as world design leaders. as mid-size sedans go, this is a big car. For 2003, nissan has improved the interior with more attractive dash textures and titanium accents for all trim levels. This year marks an improvement over the 2002 interior, but still doesn't match the fit and finish and attention to detail of the new honda accord or toyota camry, much less a volkswagen passat. it's a brilliant design, however. The dashboard is set relatively low. A binnacle directly in front of the driver contains three pods for the speedometer, tachometer, and water temperature and fuel gauges. The instruments glow orange in the dark. sound system controls live in a raised, ovoid panel in the center of the dash. Climate control knobs lie directly below, are well located and have a nice feel to them. Air conditioning vents are flush-mounted on the dash, rather than in protruding pods as in many other cars. Seams for the passenger-side airbag are invisible, cleverly hidden in a large expanse of unembellished dashboard surface. the interior design gives the altima a feeling of spaciousness. That feeling is no illusion. Front legroom in the altima is more generous than in all but the largest vehicles on the road. The altima is among the best in its class in terms of roominess and comfort. Decent-sized seats in front complement the legroom. Getting into and out of the altima is easy, thanks to a slightly higher-than-average front seating position. rear seats are supportive and comfortable with good legroom and sufficient headroom. A 6-foot, 4-inch passenger can sit comfortably behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver. A center armrest folds down and provides cup holders. Rear center passengers get a full three-point seat belt with shoulder harness. Getting in and out of the rear seats of the altima is easier than it is with other mid-size sedans. The parking brake is a proper handbrake, located in the center. There's a small, covered cubbyhole at the front of the console under the climate controls, which suffers from a flimsy lid. . driving impressionthe nissan altima comes packed with power. The se's 245-horsepower v6 is impressive, provides strong acceleration performance. Slam the throttle down at 40 mph and the altima takes off like a rocket. The v6 turns the altima into a sports sedan, especially when paired with the five-speed manual transmission. Overall, the new malibu feels smooth and is pleasant to drive. the cabin is nicely designed, attractive, and everything is easy to operate, though there are some hard plastics that detract from an otherwise first-rate interior. The seats are comfortable, with plenty of front seat room and a generous rear seat. in short, we think the chevy malibu stands up well when held against the toyota camry and honda accord gold standards. Choosing among them largely comes down to nitpicking, splitting hairs and personal preference. Camry and accord may have an edge on resale value, but they're also likely to come with higher price tags. Stabilitrak electronic stability control is standard on all 2009 models. The base model also comes with electric power steering, to save drag on the engine, while the v6-powered models come with hydraulic power steering. The malibu makes good use of its space. Despite the longer wheelbase, the car is only three inches longer than the 2007 model, giving it an attractive wheels-at-the-corners look. the malibu looks masculine, brawny, yet clean and crisp. The bodysides are completely clean and uncluttered, and the twin round taillamps pay homage to the corvette. The dual-port grille is a contemporary chevrolet design cue. We think it works better on the silverado, but it gives the malibu a distinctive look, and distinction is the goal of the midsize sedan designer. Everything within arm's reach and easy to operate. This design is brought into the 21st century with wood and metallic trim and a very pleasing blue-on-white instrumentation graphic treatment that's flooded with blue light at night. less noticeable are thoughtful features such as ambient lighting. A feature associated with expensive luxury cars recently popularized by mercedes and bmw, ambient lighting helps the driver and front passenger find secondary controls and items around the center console. A cubby on top of the dash is convenient for wallets and such, a useful feature subaru has used for years. cloth, faux-suede and leather interior options are available. The standard interiors are monotone, but several two-tone interior combinations are available, including a dramatic black-and-saddle leather combination that's very attractive. we found the leather seats in the ltz quite comfortable. Piping in a contrasting tone dresses them up. The front bucket seats are somewhere between sumptuous and luscious in the way they look and the way they sit, very comfortable and supportive. the stretch in wheelbase affords each occupant plenty of room, and there is ample headroom and legroom in the rear compartment for six-foot-plus passengers. The backs of the front seats are dished out to add knee room. The rear seatbacks flip down to provide a pass-through to the trunk. While that trunk has 15. 1 cubic feet of cargo volume, the rear pillars are pushed to the far back of the car, creating a small trunk opening that won't accept large boxes. the cabin includes a dashtop storage bin, door cubbies, and seatback pockets, plus standard ambient lighting for the overhead console and door-pull pockets. We've never cared for the look of rolled-up sliding covers on center consoles due to their ability to attract crumbs. overall, the malibu interior is attractive and comfortable. The quality of the interior materials is good. We think the malibu's interior compares well to the cabin of the honda accord. In fact, it may be more attractive, though the quality of the material on the steering wheel hub and the hard plastic on the lower dash aren't as nice. However, the chevrolet has an attractive leather shift boot when the leather upholstery is chosen, and the accord can't make that claim. every malibu comes with xm satellite radio and the latest version of onstar with turn-by-turn navigation. However, there's no gps navigation system, nor is there a back-up camera. Chevrolet says people prefer to use their portable gps units and relatively few want to pay for an oem navigation system, but we're a little skeptical of that claim. big knobs and buttons and an elegant design make operating the audio and climate functions easy. In fact, we found it easier and less confusing to make adjustments in the malibu than in a comparably equipped (non-navi) honda accord; the honda seems less intuitive and convenient. Unlike the honda, the chevrolet has the audio controls at the top, better because people tend to fiddle with their stereos more than their temperature controls. the climate controls in the malibu are very easy to operate utilizing big knobs for fan and vent modes and simple, clearly labeled buttons. Honda splits the climate controls up, forcing the driver to examine them more closely before pressing a button. Window switches are conveniently mounted on the doors. Redundant audio controls on the steering wheel are availa.
